Chingford websites.

There are a number of interesting sites about Chingford.

http://exploringeastlondon.co.uk/Chingford/Chingford.htm

http://www.chingfordhistory.org.uk/

The site for the Essex Records Office

http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/login.asp

Also Waltham Forest Archives

http://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/index/leisure/museums-galleries/vestry-house-museum/waltham-forest-archives.htm

As well as Chingford parish records on microfilm, I would want to look at Chingford poor rate assessment books 1836-38 and 1848-62 and Churchwardens, overseers of the poor and surveyors records 1764-1856. As many of the Surridges were agricultural labourers who were dependant upon parish relief they may be in those records. Also surveys and rentals for the manor of Chingford 1559-1863.

I have references to these which I found but forgot to write down which site I was on - I cannot remember if they were at Waltham or Essex records office.

Update.

Following on the confirmation from your father of his parents names and an address. I have continued searching into the Surridge family from Chingford and I am going to try to put on here what I have found. I am hopeless at keeping straight records and as I know I will be coming back to this in the summer I want to record my thinking because I will never remember it.

All this research has been done purely on the Internet. I do not live near Essex, the next step would be to confirm baptisms, marriages and burials from the parish records or sending off for all the relevant certificates.

Parts of the Surridge family tree are already on the Internet as other people have researched them, I will put on here links to them. I do not want to appear to have done other peoples work.

It will probably appear as a mishmash of thoughts - I tend to jump backwards and forwards between 3 sources - census, freeBMD and familysearch(IGI).

CENSUS information.

I pay a subscription to Acestry.co.uk they have all the original census materials for England for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 (the next one of 1911 has not been released yet). Many main libraries have a special package called Ancestry library on their computers where you can see the pages for free. The reference details given are so the relevant pages can be found again......

I love the census material, we can find out family groups, occupations, where they lived, where they were born. But we also have to remember that many mistakes were made. A man went around his district taking down details of all the people there on the night of the census. So there might be problems with spellings, ages and people missed off altogether.

If you see something like C1851, it means the census of 1851. If you want to know about the reference numbers please ask.

Thanks.

Thanks to the people on the BBC family history message board for their suggestions.

Thanks to Sylvia for letting me see her family tree which includes the Surridges I have tracked and includes some marriages I had not found and most importantly Sarah bap. 1815 ( I will explain more about that later).

Introduction

This is research for my sister in law Pearl and her dad. I hope you find some of this interesting. I will try and explain what I have found - but please feel free to ask as many questions as you would like, I love talking about family history!

I think I have found the right family, to confirm we need your grandparents names. To do a tree properly you need to have the certificates following backwards from one generation to another ie starting with your fathers birth certificate, to his parents marriage certificate, to your grandfathers birth certificate, to your grandfathers parents marriage certificate etc. If you can find a reference to these you can order them on the internet at a cost of I think £7.00 each. The cost soon mounts up. I have not done this because of the cost. Birth, marriage and death registration began sometime in 1837, so these certificates should take you back to that date. Because we don't have these certificates what we can produce is a DRAFT tree. (or a best guess tree).

To start with, I trawled through the birth certificate indexes to find your dad, that gave me his mothers maiden name and then I trawled through the marriage indexes to find a suitable marriage this gave me your grandfathers name. If these match with what your dad knows then we are on the right track.

I will still go ahead and put on here what I have found out because otherwise I will forget my train of thoughts.

I will not put full details of any living person on here, so am concentrating on pre 1901.
